2022 Gamiño Vineyard 'Redwood Red' Red Wine
Grape(s): 95% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon
Vineyard(s): Gamiño Vineyard is a gentle sloping vineyard along a creek in Redwood Valley (Mendocino County). It’s CCOF certified and is managed and farmed by Humberto Nunez, who stewards many vineyard sites that Subject to Change works with. The site is home to Chardonnay that was planted in the 60s and Merlot that was planted in the 80s.
Rhodes Vineyard in Redwood Valley is a staple Subject to Change vineyard-partner site, farmed by Richard Rhodes and his son Christian. The vineyard is a treasure trove of old vines with Grenache planted in the 40s, Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon in the 60s, and interplanted with “younger” Merlot and Zinfandel vines. The head pruned Cabernet Sauvignon is Clone 6, with very small berries (high skins to juice ratio) resulting in high levels of concentration.
AVA: Redwood Valley (Mendocino County)
Method: The Merlot was harvested at 24 brix and fully destemmed to a stainless tank for an 11 day maceration with daily pumpovers. Pressed at dryness and aged in a 7,000L foudre for 11 months.
The Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested at 22 brix and fully destemmed for a 9 day maceration with daily punchdowns. Pressed at dryness to neutral oak barrels for 11 month elevage. As always, no fining, filtration, or addition of SO2 in the making.
